Bigger and better than ever
The two previous editions of the book known by home improvement retailers as “Big Red” sold nearly 600,000 copies. This new edition features a larger portrait format for better visual clarity, and incorporates a new page layout style. But all the features that made the original America’s best-selling “bible” of home repair are still present here—thousands of color photographs and detailed step-by-step directions.
The third edition also includes more than 30 projects not found in the original edition, as well as more than 300 new photos.
Got a problem with grout? Open The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair (to page 98) and watch your tiling worries dissolve before the simple beauty of photography. Black & Decker has anticipated your every question and problem with interior, exterior, and home systems repairs, and detailed the solutions in just over 500 pages. In no other human endeavor is a visual guide so important as home repair (well, maybe brain surgery), so this is a crucial aid to the handyperson. Easy-to-find sections on floors, insulation, roofing, chimneys, water heaters, wall switches, air conditioning, and much more are well-designed, brilliantly illustrated, and carefully outlined with step-by-step instructions from masters. The photos in particular are extremely valuable, offering many different views (sometimes even exploded) of the operation in question, and always showing just enough to communicate without overwhelming the reader with too much detail. These alone would be worth the price of the book, but the written explanations and instructions are also very helpful, offering tools, materials lists, and hints that wouldn't occur to the amateur. The book finishes with a maintenance schedule to help you keep repairs from becoming serious, and the end papers have conversion charts and tables that you'll use time and again. If you can't have Norm the master carpenter over to help you fix your old house, The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair is the next best thing. --Rob Lightner

Crisp, Clean, & Surgical instructions
There are certain skills that are "wasted" on no one. Home repair is one such skill. I believe that 5 weeks after purchasing this book - the book has already paid for itself. My parents moved back into my grandmother's 1960-era house after she passed away last year. The house was in need of a few repairs, but money was a limiting factor. I had to find a way to teach myself (and my dad) how to weatherproof the basement, replacing an ancient water heater & dishwasher, replace several outlets with new GFCI (p. 397!) outlets, and finally, how to update the upstair's faucets and fixtures. I logged onto Amazon.com and typed-in HOME REPAIR. To be honest, I chose this book because it had 500+ pages and two 5-star reviews. When this book arrived, I instantly felt the weight and quality of the binding.(think college textbook material) I quickly found DETAILED descriptions of the tasks I would soon have to perform. I called my father and said "Get ready...

A great new homeowner starter book!
I just bought this book and really love it. It's simple and easy to understand, and considering that I have never done much home repair before, this was a plus. It's the hammer and nail equivilent to that Betty Crocker cookbook we've all be hauling around for years. Always something new that you never knew you needed!
Invaluable Resource
We recently purchased an old home with lots of "problems". I borrowed this book from my local library (along with Black & Decker's Home Improvement) and was amazed at how clear and detailed it was. I think the best part is how they use real photos of everything, and not sketches. There are well over 2000 photos. Within days, I was dealing with and solving basement issues, plumbing problems, electrical outlets, and many more things that I did not even thing of. The books helped so much that I decided to go ahead and purchase them here on Amazon. There are countless home improvement books out there and some rank better than others. From what I've seen, the Black & Decker series ranks at the top and are an invaluable resource. It literally pays for itself with all the money saving tips and instructions. I recommend this book, along with Black & Decker's Home Improvement and Outdoor to anyone looking to save money on home repairs.

Great guide to all types of help
I loved this book! I am a single female, and my dad bought it for me when I bought my first house. Now I'm going to buy it for a friend who just bought a house himself.Just this weekend alone I fixed my ice maker and my garbage disposal using the book as a guide. The pictures are great, and the language is easy to understand. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a great fix-it book.

Not as good as the do-it-yourself book
First off, I do want to say that this is not a negative review - I think the book is okay, but fairly limited. A far better book is the do-it-yourself book (by the same author). My reasons for recommending this book are based on the number of times I have found useful information when needed. I often pulled the fix-it-yourself book off the bookshelf without being helped, while the do-it-yourself book frequently gave me what I needed to know. I very rarely pull the fix-it-yourself book out anymore. Note - there is a new edition of the do-it-yourself book out, and amazon will not pull it up first. The new edition is even cheaper.

A must-have for do-it-yourselfers!
When an appliance breaks down, it can be tough to scrape up the money to repair it. As a single income family, saving money is the name of the game! This book allows you to troubleshoot the most common problems, and most of the time fix it yourself! It's got other great tips and tricks as well, but I got it mainly for the help on our major appliances! Books on home repair are a dime a dozen, but a book like this pays for itself in just ONE use! A must have on MY bookshelf!

Vagrants and tree shade: Old ordinance books give insight into mid-1800s city life
01.01.70
On Aug. 12, 1863, shade was a priority in Lawrence.
As the U.S. Civil War raged, evidently so did the heat. It caused Lawrence City Council members to take up their pens and craft City Ordinance No. 114, declaring that city residents were hereby allowed to build a fence five feet beyond any shade tree to provide it protection.
How do we know this? Simple. Lawrence’s official storybook tells us. Inside a locked storage room on the third floor of City Hall there’s a whole corner full of the books. Most of them are a good 18 inches tall and heavy. Inside many of them — the oldest ones — are line after line of handwritten ink.
They’re city ordinances. To make a law in Lawrence, you first have to pass an ordinance. And there is one thing about an ordinance that was true in the Horse and Buggy Age of the 1850s and the Electronic Age of the 21st century. An ordinance, according to state law, has to have a home in a book — a real, honest-to-goodness paper creation.
By practising a range of techniques and listening to an accompanying CD,
readers are told they can learn to use their mind to its fullest potential.
Learning will become easier and more enjoyable and various blocks that stop
you learning will be removed. The techniques, he says, help to clear out old
baggage, fear and frustration and free up more of your mind for positive
pursuits.
“It’s a combination of a bunch of things. It de-links you from a feeling where
you had a trauma or a block about learning. It will increase your
intelligence, give you greater confidence in exams, improve your memory. And
if you are older this will improve your chances of staying sharper longer. I
can do all sorts of things that I couldn’t [when] I started doing this,” he
says confidently. “I can now spell words that I couldn’t before because of
my dyslexia. Even maths is easier.”
All these claims seem incredible, as do his successful treatment programmes
for smokers and dieters, but, to me, the absolute testament to McKenna’s
skill is that he was able to hypnotise my cat. It used to take three people
and a set of bath towels to get him into his crate to go to the vet. Once in
there he would scream like a demon and do other terrible things. Through a
“tapping technique”, which McKenna once taught me and which involved me
tapping the cat gently around his head, he became completely calm. McKenna
uses variations of this technique, said to “take people to a place of mental
safety”, in many of his treatments. “It produces more serotonin,” he says,
and, again, “de-links you from a feeling of trauma”.

About this book
Recently appointed as the new U. S. Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser has been writing and publishing poetry for more than forty years. In the pages of The Poetry Home Repair Manual, Kooser brings those decades of experience to bear. Here are tools and insights, the instructions (and warnings against instructions) that poets—aspiring or practicing—can use to hone their craft, perhaps into art. Using examples from his own rich literary oeuvre and from the work of a number of successful contemporary poets, the author schools us in the critical relationship between poet and reader, which is fundamental to what Kooser believes is poetry’s ultimate purpose: to reach other people and touch their hearts. Much more than a guidebook to writing and revising poems, this manual has all the comforts and merits of a long and enlightening conversation with a wise and patient old friend—a friend who is willing to share everything he’s learned about the art he’s spent a lifetime learning to execute...
